New Common Core Standards
In the 2012-13 school year, all English teachers in the state of North Carolina will be working with our students under a new set of teaching standards. Although these standards have many similarities to the NC Standard Course of Study we have followed in the past, there are some changes and additions. Please take the time to look over the Common Core standards so that you will be more aware of what our students are expected to learn to do. Thank you.

Dialectic JournalsStudents will be required to keep a dialectic journal in which they reflect upon and analyze the daily reading assignments. For most reading assignments, students should have 3 – 5 quotes per chapter; some responses will be rather lengthy while others may not be. When I grade these, I will be looking for in-depth discussion and consideration of the text’s meaning, relation to other texts, use of literary technique, etc. Please go to http://www.classroommatters.com/download/dialectic.pdf for an example of this type of journal.
These journals will be irreplaceable when writing literary analysis essays and when completing the final project for the semester. Please be sure to keep up with these journals daily. These journals should be kept in a single-subject spiral notebook and kept in the literature section of your binder. |
